Once again, I had the distinct pleasure of helping to put together the website for the 2013 edUi conference. This year, we had another new design, created by Wren Lanier. The new design is much simpler than previous designs, laying everything out in a beautiful vertical pattern. This year’s design made the responsive aspect of the site extremely simple in most cases.
For this project, I didn’t have to do much to tweak the functionality of the site, as we had much of that in place already from past years. However, I did spend a little bit of extra time on the schedule page this time around. Instead of just being a flat schedule, I added a tiny bit of interactivity to it. During the conference, the schedule was set up to recognize what time it currently was, and locate that item within the schedule itself. Any event that was currently happening, or was getting ready to begin within the next 15 minutes was highlighted with a light blue background. Any event that would be ending within the next 15 minutes was highlighted with a light red background. Then, there was a button at the top of the schedule page that allowed visitors to scroll automatically to the current time slot.
All-in-all, I think this site turned out beautifully, and I’ve got a lot of great ideas for next year’s conference website.
