Bethania Kids – A Brand New Website

A few weeks ago, we were very proud to unveil a brand new website for our client Bethania Kids. The project took approximately 4 months from start to finish, and turned out extremely well. Starting with a beautiful and challenging website design from Moeller Design, we took the ball and ran with it, building a full-featured website based on WordPress 3.0.1.

From the Bethania Kids mission statement:

The mission of Bethania Kids is to nurture, and equip the children of India to change their world through Jesus’ love. Bethania Kids defines nurturing as providing food, clothing, shelter, medical and dental care, and emotional support.

The new website includes a promotional marquee for the home page, which is easily switched out using the WordPress backend. The client now has the ability to post a single marquee image that will appear every time the home page is loaded or multiple promotional items that will rotate randomly each time a visitor returns to the home page. Using the “sticky” posts feature in WordPress, a single promo item can appear each time a new visitor comes to the website, with random promo items appearing on each subsequent visit.

The website design incorporates a 3-column layout, utilizing the WordPress featured images feature to display images, quotations and captions in the right sidebar. All of the menus on the website, with the exception of the navigation menu in the left sidebar, are generated using the new “Menus” feature built into WordPress 3.x.

In addition, the site makes great use of new CSS3 features to reduce the weight and increase the flexibility of most of the pages for anyone using a modern browser. The maps and the location pins displayed in the “Our Ministries” section of the website utilize the CSS3 feature of applying multiple backgrounds (the map itself is one image, with each pin being a separate background image). All of the gradients and drop shadows on the website are applied using browsers’ native CSS features.

The website also integrates Google Calendar to display the calendar of events and Google’s Picasa Web interface to generate the photo gallery. The news articles displayed in the “News” section of the website are actually generated from a custom post type within the WordPress administration area.

The new website makes use of the search-engine friendly permalinks built into WordPress, as well as some custom and auto-generated keywords and descriptions managed by the All-in-One SEO Pack plug-in for WordPress.

As part of the project, we made sure to redirect all of the old URLs that were auto-generated by the ColdFusion CMS the client was previously using so that they all lead to the appropriate places on the new website.

All-in-all, we feel that this project was a resounding success, and the client has shared similar emotions with us. As a point of comparison, below is a screen shot of the old home page and a screen shot of the new home page. Let us know what you think.
